Learn to defend yourself effectively

We use traditional Japanese Ju-Jitsu martial arts in modern situations of conflict

MUSUBI AIKI CLUB

Our Aïkido dojo, at the Student’s Sports Association of Liege University (RCAE), was founded a little bit more than thirty years ago and the late Jean-Pierre Dewandre was the Sensei until his passing away in 2005. The techniques taught by him have been largely influenced by Nobuyoshi Tamura Shihan, one of the prefered uchi deshi of O Sensei. Early in the study of Aïkido Jean-Pierre, often, confronted the students with more realistic situations to avoid falling into the trap of static techniques. Of course, working statically may be interesting to go back to basics, to go back to the principle of Aïkido but we need to get out from it because anyone would attack you in a static way. Since the passing away of Jean-Pierre, all instructors of the Musubi Aiki Dojo continue to work this way.

We are an open minded club and all currents of Aïkido are welcome to work with us in order to improve the techniques of each. We also work with practitioners of other martial arts like Jujitsu, Karate or Iaïdo because we believe that no martial art is better than another. All roads lead to the top of the mountain or if a cup was only one sided we could not fill it with tea (both are japanese sayings). We just have one or two things in horror however ... It’s federation’s politics and people saying : “What I’m doing is the best, etc ...”.

Head Instructor

I began my martial arts life in 1986 by full contact kickboxing. I really enjoyed this art but, after a certain time, I felt that I was missing something. Two years later I began my studies at the University of Liege and I entered one of the dojo of the University students sport’s association (RCAE). I saw a thin man throwing people bigger and heavier than me with such an ease that it looked like something magic. It was really the first time I heard about aïkido and the man I’m talking about is Jean-Pierre. He gave me the virus of aïkido. He gave the virus of the constant improvement of myself, of aïkido and of budo. A little before his passing away in 2005, Jean-Pierre asked me to be the head instructor of the Musubi Aïki club.

My questions about budo brought me to work different approaches such as kendo, iaïdo and karate of Wado ryu style. For karate, I have the great chance to work with sensei Phuc and Thong. In aïkido, my most determining meetings were with Nobuyoshi Tamura and Chris Moslin senseis. I also met other senseis during my aikidoka life such as M. Vanhomwegen, Tomita, Matsuoka etc … All the senseis I have met still give me today subjects to work.

During the Tai Kai of Namur in November 2009, I was appointed sandan by the Aikibudo Fraternity from the hand of Chris Moslin sensei. I’m also a member of the Kodo Butoku Renmei and I’m the aikido bucho for Belgium.

Christiane Duchesne

Instructor

At 39, I joined the students’ sport association (RCAE) of the University and its Aikido Club (Musubi Aiki Club). Jean-Pierre Dewandre was my first sensei. I received my Shodan from Jean-Pierre Dewandre and Chris Moslin in 2004.

I had the opportunity to visit different clubs in Belgium, UK, Hungary and Japan. These are good memories of new ways of practising and thinking aikido. I feel that teaching is a very good way of learning as well because it improves your observation skill and sends you back in front of your own practice.
