DOJO ETIQUETTE

Within Japnese martial arts there is very strick etiquette when training in a dojo, here we have outlined the basic rules. Although within each club they may vary slightly but as a whole they are generally the same.

All of the Martial Arts taught within the Fraternity at the moment are Japanese based arts, which bring with them certain formalities and traditions, here are some pointers to help newcomers cope with the basics.

Upon entering the Dojo (training Room) the student should bow (rei) toward the mat area (tatami) or if there is a shrine (Kamiza) towards that.

Only bare footed practitioners are generally allowed on the mat and feet should be clean and nails clipped.

Upon reaching the edge of the tatami the student should wait to catch the eye of the Instructor and bow when stepping on to the mat.

If a student has to leave the mat area at any time he must inform the Instructor.

When leaving the tatami for any reason students should turn, face toward the Instructor  and bow.

When kneeling (seiza) at the start of a class it is normally in grade order. When kneeling the knees should be two to three fist widths apart, the hands resting lightly on the thighs and the back straight.

The kneeling bow (rei) differs from style to style in detail, except for one important point, the students should not raise their heads before the Instructor does.

When training or practising with a partner, when you finish there should be a mutual bow of thanks to each other. Also please realise that the way in which you train implies that you will happily accept the same treatment from your partner.

Remember that nails should be kept short and clean to avoid injury and subsequent infection.

Students are expected to be on time and help with preparation of the Dojo.

All students are expected to help with clearing the Dojo when training has finished.
